A Vision Rooted in Values: His Majesty’s Message on 118th National Day

As Bhutan marked its 118th National Day, His Majesty the King addressed the nation from Bumthang with a message that blended reflection, resolve, and a clear vision for the future. At the heart of his address was the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a transformative initiative that the King described as central to Bhutan’s long-term prosperity and identity.

More than an urban development project, the GMC is envisioned as a distinctly Bhutanese “Buddhist city,” one that harmonizes spiritual life with economic opportunity while safeguarding the nation’s cultural heritage. His Majesty emphasized that the project is built on collective effort, drawing strength from the support of the Bhutanese people, the government, and international partners, including India. This shared commitment, he noted, reflects Bhutan’s ability to move forward without losing sight of its values.

The King outlined the steady progress already made. Plans for the Gelephu International Airport are advancing, positioning the region as a vital gateway for connectivity and growth. Alongside physical infrastructure, spiritual centers are being established to ensure that mindfulness and cultural continuity remain integral to the city’s foundation. Equally significant is the investment in people: Bhutanese youth are being trained through the Pelsung program to eventually manage and lead the GMC, ensuring that the project remains in capable national hands.

To guarantee that development benefits are shared fairly, His Majesty explained that the GMC will be structured as a company, with shares linked to land holdings. This approach ensures that landowners retain a direct stake in the project, preventing displacement and reinforcing inclusive growth. Financial stability, he added, will be strengthened by allocating USD 1 billion in Bitcoin—generated from a previous initiative—as a long-term strategic reserve dedicated to funding the GMC.

Underlying the King’s confidence in the project was a deeper belief in the unity and dedication of the Bhutanese people. He expressed assurance that it is this collective spirit that will ultimately turn vision into reality.

The National Day address also reflected on the broader journey Bhutan has undertaken under His Majesty’s guidance over the past two decades. During a period of significant national transition, the King has consistently placed the well-being of the people at the center of governance. His speeches over the years have repeatedly highlighted unity, youth empowerment, democratic values, economic resilience, and national security as pillars of Bhutan’s progress.

Programs such as Land Kidu, alongside sustained investments in education and skill development, illustrate a people-first approach to development. His Majesty has championed meritocracy as essential for effective governance, while reaffirming democracy as a cornerstone of national stability. Economic resilience remains a recurring theme, particularly the creation of meaningful opportunities for young Bhutanese and the pursuit of sustainable prosperity.

Within this broader framework, the Gelephu Mindfulness City stands out as a forward-looking strategy—one designed to strengthen economic connectivity, foster innovation, and build skills for the future, all while remaining grounded in Bhutan’s unique philosophy. The King’s vision, as reaffirmed on National Day, is ultimately one of peace, security, and the fulfillment of Gross National Happiness, supported by a strong democracy and a confident, capable generation ready to lead the nation forward.
