Bangladesh Embassy Complex Inaugurated in Thimphu

A significant milestone in Bhutan–Bangladesh relations was marked today with the inauguration of the newly constructed Bangladesh Embassy Complex at Hejo, Thimphu. Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck graced the event, alongside Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, senior ministers, and distinguished guests.

The 1.5-acre property, gifted by His Majesty The King during his visit to Bangladesh last year, houses both the chancery and the Ambassador’s residence. Completed over nearly two years at a cost of approximately Nu 510 million, the modern facility is expected to enhance Bangladesh’s diplomatic presence in Bhutan.

Bangladesh’s Ambassador, Shib Nath Roy, reflected on the historic ties between the two nations, recalling Bhutan’s early recognition of Bangladesh’s independence. “His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck was the first to recognise our sovereignty. This recognition was pivotal, and from such strong beginnings, our friendship has grown ever deeper,” he said.

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay described the chancery as a living symbol of friendship and collaboration. “This is more than just a diplomatic space — it is a sanctuary where ideas will flourish, partnerships will grow, and friendships will endure. These transparent glass walls connect Bangladesh and Bhutan, inside and out,” he remarked.

Ambassador Roy emphasised that the new facility would pave the way for expanded cooperation in diverse sectors, including trade, connectivity, culture, agriculture, hydropower, water resources, ICT, and healthcare.

Since establishing formal diplomatic relations in 1973, Bhutan and Bangladesh have deepened cooperation in multiple fields. Landmark agreements include the 2020 Preferential Trade Agreement, in effect since July 2022, allowing duty-free access for 100 Bangladeshi products to Bhutan and 34 Bhutanese products to Bangladesh. Connectivity has also improved through the renewal of the 2017 MoU on Inland Waterways, granting Bhutan access to Bangladeshi seaports until 2027.

From Bhutan’s early recognition of Bangladesh’s independence to today’s inauguration, the two nations’ relationship continues to strengthen — and the new chancery stands as a testament to that enduring friendship.
