First-Ever SAARC Festival of Rice and Spices in Paro

Bhutan has opened its doors to a vibrant celebration of culinary heritage with the inaugural SAARC Festival of Rice Culinary Arts and Spice Exhibition, which runs from October 15 to 17 in the scenic town of Paro.

Organized by the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development (DCDD) in partnership with the SAARC Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka, the festival brings together chefs, artisans, and cultural representatives from across South Asia to honor the shared legacy of rice—the region’s most essential grain.

The three-day event features a food festival, live cooking demonstrations, a spice exhibition, and a display of traditional kitchen implements. A dedicated workshop will also explore the revitalization of fading crafts linked to rice-based cuisine and promote traditional rice varieties unique to SAARC member countries.

“The festival offers an important platform for cultural exchange and innovation,” said officials from the organizing committee, emphasizing the event’s goal to foster collaboration among participating nations through food and flavor.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, D. N. Dhungyel, inaugurated the festival as the chief guest, commending the initiative for “celebrating South Asia’s culinary diversity while preserving the traditional practices that define our collective identity.”

With aromatic spices filling the air and a rich array of regional dishes on display, the festival not only showcases the artistry of rice cuisine but also reinforces Bhutan’s growing role as a hub for cultural diplomacy in the region.
