First Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic in Thimphu Inaugurated by Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck

In a milestone for women’s healthcare, Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck inaugurated the nation’s first multidisciplinary breast clinic at the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital.

The newly launched clinic is a landmark step in strengthening the country’s capacity to fight breast cancer, a disease that has increasingly challenged women’s health worldwide. Unlike traditional facilities, the clinic brings together screening, diagnosis, surgery, and oncology services under one roof — streamlining access to specialized care for patients.

Developed through collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, and the Gyalyum Charitable Trust, the project also benefited from technical expertise and support from the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer in Thailand.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the facility is set to transform early detection and treatment in Bhutan. Key additions include a Tomosynthesis 3D Mammography Machine for advanced imaging, a Faxitron HD Specimen Radiography Unit for precision in surgical procedures, and a Near-Infrared Camera to assist in treatment planning.

Health officials emphasized that the initiative reflects Bhutan’s commitment to equitable access to quality care. By embedding the clinic within existing hospital infrastructure, the project ensures long-term sustainability while addressing a critical gap in women’s healthcare services.

Speaking at the inauguration, Her Majesty underscored the importance of collective responsibility in combating breast cancer and reaffirmed the nation’s resolve to protect women’s health through innovation, compassion, and collaboration.
