The ambitious Gelephu International Airport project is entering a new phase of accelerated activity, transitioning to round-the-clock operations in a bid to keep pace with its 2029 completion target.
The Rigsar-Vajra Joint Venture, responsible for delivering the multi-stage development, is ramping up earth-filling works by deploying an estimated 1,400 workers across day and night shifts. The expanded workforce will be supported by a growing fleet of heavy machinery, including newly hired excavators, dump trucks, and compactors sourced from Bhutan and India.
To accommodate the influx of laborers, a dedicated worker’s camp is being built on-site, offering free food and accommodation. The management has also bolstered its safety team, bringing in personnel from both countries to oversee the demanding schedule.
Safety at the Core
Safety protocols are a daily fixture at the site, with morning toolbox talks held for 30 minutes before shifts commence, and weekly training sessions covering a range of workplace hazards. A fully equipped health clinic, staffed ambulance, and plans for an on-site first-aid officer aim to ensure prompt medical support for the large crew.
Phased Development
Construction will unfold in several critical phases — beginning with river diversion and extensive land preparation, before progressing to runway paving, terminal construction, and the installation of advanced airport systems.
When complete, the airport is expected to be a major hub for Bhutan, bolstering connectivity and economic growth. With 24/7 operations now in place, project leaders say they are determined to meet their milestone goals while maintaining strict safety and welfare standards.
