In a continued show of support for Bhutan’s economic recovery and development initiatives, the Government of India (GoI) yesterday released the fourth tranche of the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), amounting to Nu 2.5 billion.
At a formal ceremony held in Thimphu, India’s Ambassador to Bhutan, Sandeep Arya, handed over the cheque to Finance Minister Lekey Dorji in the presence of Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
The latest tranche underscores India’s enduring partnership and commitment to Bhutan’s post-pandemic economic revitalization and sustainable growth. The ESP aims to bolster sectors such as agriculture, small and medium enterprises, and infrastructure development, while generating employment and stimulating private sector activity.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Arya reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for Bhutan’s economic stability and development aspirations. “This tranche represents not only financial assistance but also India’s confidence in Bhutan’s economic resilience and reform efforts,” he said.
Finance Minister Lekey Dorji expressed gratitude to the Government of India for its continued assistance, emphasizing that the funds would be used effectively to accelerate economic activities and strengthen Bhutan’s fiscal position.
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who attended the ceremony, highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations and India’s crucial role in supporting Bhutan’s national priorities.
The Economic Stimulus Programme, launched in partnership with the Government of India, is a key component of Bhutan’s strategy to promote inclusive growth and economic diversification in the wake of global economic challenges. With the release of the fourth tranche, the total disbursement under the ESP now stands as a significant milestone in Bhutan’s ongoing efforts to achieve economic self-reliance and stability.
