Construction of the Kurukulee Centre, a landmark spiritual and cultural project under the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) initiative, is set to begin early next year. The project, inspired and initiated by Gangtey Trulku Rinpoche, is one of 11 major spiritual developments endorsed by His Majesty The King.
Envisioned as a sanctuary for meditation, study, and Vajrayana Buddhist practice, the Kurukulee Centre is expected to serve as a spiritual home for seekers from Bhutan and around the world. The five-year project carries an estimated cost of more than Nu 2 billion, with financial support secured from international donors.
The Centre’s design will take the form of a living Mandala — a five-story architectural embodiment of harmony and balance. Within its intricate layout, the facility will house spaces dedicated to meditation, Dharma studies, and spiritual retreats, all reflecting the essence of Jetsuenma Kurukulee’s teachings.
A governing board has been established to oversee the project’s development. It includes an executive committee led by Gangtey Trulku and a panel of esteemed spiritual advisors, ensuring that both administrative and spiritual guidance shape the Centre’s evolution.
The Kurukulee Centre forms a vital part of His Majesty’s vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City — a modern urban landscape grounded in spiritual depth, environmental harmony, and holistic well-being. By anchoring development in mindfulness and compassion, the project aims to transform GMC into a global hub of contemplative practice and enlightened living.
As the groundwork begins, the Kurukulee Centre stands as a symbol of Bhutan’s enduring commitment to balancing spiritual wisdom with progressive growth — a living expression of a nation guided by mindfulness.
