Middle East Tensions Disrupt Bhutan’s Spring Tourism as Flights to Dubai Cancelled

Rising tensions in the Middle East are beginning to ripple across Bhutan’s tourism sector, with several international flights cancelled and tour operators reporting disruptions just as the country’s busy spring travel season gets underway.

Bhutan’s national carrier, Drukair, has cancelled five flights on its Paro–Dubai route due to the ongoing instability in the region. The cancellations have affected numerous travellers, including international tourists and participants who were scheduled to take part in the Bhutan International Marathon.

The disruption comes at a particularly sensitive time for Bhutan’s tourism industry. Spring is traditionally one of the country’s most important tourist seasons, when major cultural festivals and outdoor events draw visitors from across the world. Tour operators say that while the current situation remains manageable, the cancellations have already triggered concerns among travel companies and hospitality providers.

Several tour operators have reported that some visitors have already cancelled their travel plans, and they expect more changes in bookings if the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate. Many international tourists travelling to Bhutan rely on transit routes through major aviation hubs such as Dubai, making the Paro–Dubai connection a crucial link.

Industry stakeholders warn that prolonged disruptions could have broader consequences for Bhutan’s tourism sector, which is still recovering from the economic setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the situation, Drukair has introduced measures to assist affected passengers. The airline is offering full refunds, rebooking options and alternative routing arrangements. It has also waived change fees for travellers impacted by the flight cancellations.

Meanwhile, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Bhutan has expressed concern about the potential effects on the hospitality industry if the instability persists. Hotels and restaurants across the country rely heavily on the spring influx of international tourists, and sustained travel disruptions could slow the sector’s recovery.

For now, tourism officials and businesses are closely monitoring the situation, hoping that stability will return quickly so the peak travel season can proceed without further setbacks.
