Royal Visit Shines Spotlight on Bhutan’s Emerging Tech Talent

In a momentous occasion that underscored Bhutan’s commitment to digital innovation and education, Their Majesties The King and Queen, accompanied by Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel and Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck, graced the 2025 Capstone Tech Innovation Showcase at Gyalpozhing College of Information Technology (GCIT) on Tuesday.

The Royal Family’s presence brought warmth and encouragement to the college community, highlighting the nation’s aspirations for a technologically empowered future.

A significant highlight of the event was the inauguration of GCIT’s newly constructed Multipurpose Hall. The ceremony included a visually stunning 3D presentation of the hall, meticulously designed and rendered by GCIT’s in-house team, Studio K.

The annual Capstone Tech Showcase served as a platform for final-year students to present their innovative solutions to real-world challenges using cutting-edge technology. This year’s exhibits reflected a strong focus on sustainability, digital governance, and national development. Among the standout projects were:

  • An AI-powered IoT system designed to promote sustainable Himalayan crawfish farming, developed in partnership with collaborators in Singapore.
  • A blockchain-based national digital voting platform, with its core blockchain technology entirely developed by GCIT students.
  • A smart helicopter reservation interface aimed at improving emergency response and logistics.
  • A secure land transaction ledger utilizing blockchain to enhance transparency and reduce fraud.
  • ZhingScan, an AI-driven solution for crop protection and farm management.
  • A 3-tier architecture facility management system for the National Housing Development Corporation Ltd. (NHDCL).
  • A generative AI project for Natural Language Conversational Systems (NLCS) under the RAG framework.

These projects represent the first cohort of students who have completed GCIT’s revamped curriculum, introduced under Royal Command. The new academic program was designed to better prepare Bhutanese students for global competition by aligning their education with fast-evolving technological landscapes.

As Bhutan continues its journey toward becoming a knowledge-based society, GCIT’s transformation stands as a model of how education can be reimagined to meet future demands. The showcase not only celebrated student achievement but also reaffirmed national commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in the digital era.
