Teacher Chimi Dema Wins Prestigious Princess Maha Chakri Award

In a historic milestone for Bhutan’s education community, Chimi Dema, a dedicated teacher, has become the first Bhutanese recipient of the Princess Maha Chakri Award (PMCA) in 2025. The award, one of the most prestigious recognitions for educators in Southeast Asia, honors exceptional teachers who have made a profound and lasting impact on their students, schools, and society.

For Chimi Dema, the recognition is not just personal—it is a tribute to every hardworking teacher in Bhutan. “This award belongs to all Bhutanese educators who continue to teach with passion, patience, and love,” she said. Her humility and gratitude have resonated deeply across the country’s teaching community.

Chimi’s journey in education has been marked by inspiration and service. She credits a Bangladeshi teacher she once met for inspiring her to view teaching as a lifelong mission of shaping lives. She believes Bhutanese teachers exemplify the true spirit of education by valuing real learning over recognition, nurturing curiosity, empathy, and resilience among students.

Beyond the classroom, Chimi wears many hats—she is a Desuup (a member of Bhutan’s national volunteer force), a community worker, and the creator of the Artistic Champions project, which promotes creativity and character building among youth. Her commitment to holistic education extends far beyond textbooks and classrooms.

Reflecting on her success, Chimi Dema expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who guided and supported her along the way. “I owe this to the blessings of His Majesty The King, my parents’ unconditional love, and the motivation I receive from my students every single day,” she said.

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development received 33 nominations for the 2025 PMCA, but it was Chimi’s exceptional dedication and innovative approach to education that ultimately set her apart.

As Bhutan celebrates this achievement, Chimi Dema’s story stands as a beacon of inspiration—reminding the nation that great teachers not only impart knowledge but also shape the soul of a country.
