Bhutan Condemns Pahalgam Attack, Stands in Solidarity with India

Bhutan has strongly condemned the terrorist attack that struck the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, India on April 22, marking one of the deadliest assaults on tourists in India in recent years. The attack claimed the lives of at least 28 people and left more than 20 injured, including foreign nationals and Indian government officials.

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, in a heartfelt social media post, conveyed his condolences to the victims and all those affected by what he described as a “horrific terrorist attack.” He stated, “Bhutan strongly condemns such brutal acts of terror & stands firmly with the Government & people of India in solidarity & friendship”.

The attack occurred when five armed militants entered the Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination, and opened fire on visitors. Survivors recounted harrowing scenes as the assailants targeted male tourists, reportedly asking for names and religions before shooting. The Resistance Front, a proxy group linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the massacre, which has sent shockwaves across the region.

Bhutan’s condemnation underscores the deep and enduring friendship between the two Himalayan neighbours. As India’s closest bilateral partner, Bhutan’s swift expression of solidarity reflects the strong bonds of goodwill, trust, and cooperation that have defined relations between the two countries for decades.

Bhutan and India have a history of standing together in times of crisis, with regular high-level exchanges and extensive collaboration in trade, development, and security. Prime Minister Tobgay’s message reaffirms Bhutan’s commitment to supporting India in the fight against terrorism and upholding regional peace and stability.

Bhutan joined other neighbours, including China, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, in condemning the attack. The outpouring of support highlights the shared determination in South Asia to confront the menace of terrorism and to ensure the safety of civilians and tourists across the region.

As investigations and security operations continue in Jammu and Kashmir, Bhutan stands resolutely with India. The people of Bhutan extend their prayers and support to the families of the victims and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of regional cooperation and vigilance in safeguarding peace and security for all.
