Historic Royal Visit Unites Bhutanese Community in Perth

In an unprecedented display of unity and cultural pride, Perth’s HBF Park Stadium was thronged yesterday by nearly 16,000 Bhutanese Australians eager to welcome Their Majesties the King and Queen, along with Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck, and Gyalsem Sonam Yangden Wangchuck. This landmark event marks the first of two scheduled Royal audiences in the city, which boasts the largest Bhutanese population outside of Bhutan.

The atmosphere was electric as cheers filled the stadium upon the arrival of the Royal family, with many attendees visibly moved by the historic moment. Their Majesties addressed the crowd, emphasizing the significance of the visit in strengthening ties between Bhutan and its diaspora in Australia.

“We are here to honor and connect with the Bhutanese community abroad,” His Majesty declared, highlighting the importance of maintaining cultural and familial bonds across continents.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation on Bhutan’s ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) project. GMC CEO Mun Leong Liew and his team unveiled the updated master plan, inviting Bhutanese Australians to contribute their ideas and expertise to this transformative national initiative. “Your involvement is crucial to the success of GMC,” Liew stated, encouraging active participation from the community.

The day was also rich with cultural performances, meticulously rehearsed in anticipation of the Royal visit. Traditional dances and music captivated the audience, showcasing Bhutan’s vibrant heritage and the community’s dedication to preserving their cultural identity abroad.

As the program concluded, Their Majesties took time to meet with the attendees, fostering a heartfelt connection that resonated deeply with the Bhutanese Australians. The inclusion of sacred nangten, brought from Bhutan, added a spiritual dimension to the gathering. These revered relics will soon be displayed at the Khamsum Zilnon Drukpai Lhakhang, allowing the community to receive blessings in the days to come.

Recognizing the substantial Bhutanese population in Perth, organizers arranged for a second Royal audience scheduled for tomorrow, ensuring that more community members have the opportunity to partake in this historic occasion.

Behind the scenes, thousands of volunteers, including desuups and performers, dedicated their time and energy to orchestrate the seamless execution of the event. Their unwavering commitment was instrumental in the day’s success, reflecting the collective spirit of the Bhutanese community.

Attendees expressed immense pride and gratitude for the chance to engage with Their Majesties. “This visit is a testament to our strong ties with Bhutan,” remarked Tandin Dorji, a local community leader. “It’s a day we will cherish forever.”

As Perth continues to celebrate this significant Royal visit, the Bhutanese community stands united, honoring their heritage while looking forward to a future of continued collaboration and cultural exchange.
