Young Tennis Stars Shine at Bhutan Junior Championship

Bhutan’s emerging tennis talents took centre stage at the inaugural Bhutan Junior Tennis Championship, which concluded in Thimphu with enthusiastic participation from young athletes across the country.

The tournament, organised by the Bhutan Tennis Federation, brought together 59 junior players from Thimphu and Phuentshogling, providing a competitive platform for children to showcase their abilities and deepen their interest in the sport. The finals were graced by Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, underscoring growing national support for youth sports development.

The championship highlighted not only athletic skill but also the increasing popularity of tennis among Bhutanese youth. Organisers said the event aimed to nurture discipline, confidence and sportsmanship while encouraging more young people to pursue the game competitively.

Among the standout performers was seven-year-old Selsang Efel Deyki from Trashigang, who captured the Under-10 girls’ title. A Class Two student at Pelkhil School, she only began playing tennis last year but has already set ambitious goals for herself.

Expressing her excitement after the victory, Selsang said she hopes to participate in more tournaments and dreams of becoming one of the world’s best tennis players.

In the Under-10 boys’ division, nine-year-old Yoesel Rangdel Dorji of Little Dragon School secured the championship title. The young player credited his success to the guidance of his coaches and the encouragement of his parents and the federation.

Another notable achievement came from Tenzin Dudu of Dechencholing Higher Secondary School, who dominated the tournament by winning both the Under-14 and Under-16 categories. He also finished runner-up in the Lucky Mixed Doubles event.

Having started tennis only in 2023, Tenzin said he remains determined to continue training and improving his performance in future competitions.

The championship concluded with scenes of camaraderie and determination as young athletes demonstrated impressive talent and competitive spirit. Observers say the success of the event signals a promising future for tennis in Bhutan and reflects broader efforts to strengthen the country’s sporting culture among the younger generation.
