Buddhist Monks in Laos Bless Indian PM During Historic Visit

In a ceremony symbolizing the deep-rooted cultural and civilizational ties between India and Laos, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received blessings from revered Buddhist monks upon his arrival in Vientiane. The auspicious event marks a significant milestone in Modi’s two-day visit, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and celebrating a decade of India’s Act East Policy.

Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora in Laos at the Hotel Double Tree, where enthusiastic community members greeted him with open arms. The atmosphere was vibrant as a traditional Bihu dance performance captivated the audience, earning praise from the Prime Minister for its spirited execution.

The ceremonial blessings were conducted by senior monks of the Central Buddhist Fellowship Organization of Laos, led by the esteemed Abbot Mahaveth Masenai of Si Saket Temple in Vientiane. In a heartfelt gesture shared on the Ministry of External Affairs’ social media platform, the monks extended their prayers to Modi, underscoring the shared Buddhist heritage that binds the two nations.

Several high-profile dignitaries were present to honor PM Modi’s visit, including Laos’ Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Education and Sports, Governor of the Bank of Laos, and the Mayor of Vientiane. Their presence highlighted the significance of the occasion and the mutual respect between the two countries.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is set to participate in the 21st ASEAN-India and the 19th East Asia Summit, forums pivotal to regional cooperation and India’s strategic vision of Security and Growth for All in the region. This visit coincides with the tenth anniversary of India’s Act East Policy, emphasizing enhanced connectivity and economic collaboration with Southeast Asian nations.

A notable aspect of Modi’s visit is the ongoing collaboration between India and Laos in cultural conservation. The Archeological Survey of India is actively partnering with the Laotian government to preserve historic temples, including the iconic Vat Phou. Additionally, Modi witnessed a captivating performance of the Lao Ramayan, known locally as Phalak Phalam, by the prestigious Royal Theatre of Luang Prabang, showcasing the enduring influence of Indian epics in Laotian culture.

India’s developmental assistance to Laos is multifaceted, encompassing initiatives like the Lao-India Entrepreneurship Development Centre (LIEDC), established in 2004 to nurture local entrepreneurs. Furthermore, India has extended lines of credit exceeding USD 230 million for various Quick Impact Projects and supports a thriving bilateral trade exceeding USD 100 million.

The Mekong-Ganga Cooperation stands as a testament to the strategic partnership under India’s Act East Policy, fostering regional integration and economic prosperity. Historical ties, dating back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1956, continue to flourish, underpinned by shared religious and cultural heritage.

Invited by Laos’ Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, PM Modi’s visit underscores the enduring friendship and collaborative spirit between India and Laos. As Bhutan closely observes these developments, the reinforced India-Laos alliance presents opportunities for broader regional harmony and shared growth within the broader Himalayan and Southeast Asian landscapes.
