Unity and Devotion Highlighted at 10th Annual Drukpa Council

The spiritual community gathered in Kathmandu reached a harmonious close to the 10th Annual Drukpa Council (ADC) yesterday, marked by profound teachings from the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa, the esteemed leader of the Drukpa lineage. The event took place at the newly rebuilt Naro Hall of Druk Amitabha Mountain, serving as a beacon for Drukpa Sangha members worldwide as they welcomed the new year.

Over five days, the ADC became a melting pot of practitioners, scholars, and followers from various corners of the globe, reinforcing the lineage’s commitment to unity and collective spiritual growth. The six-year hiatus preceding this year’s council underscored its significance, drawing a vibrant crowd that included many young masters eager to contribute to the lineage’s future.

In his closing address, Gyalwang Drukpa underscored the critical role of single-mindedness and unwavering devotion in the pursuit of Dharma. He articulated that a focused mind, coupled with steadfast faith, is indispensable for meaningful spiritual practice. “Engaging with Dharma without these attributes is akin to navigating a vast supermarket without a shopping list,” he analogized, emphasizing the need for clear intentions on the spiritual path.

To illustrate his point, Gyalwang Drukpa shared a poignant story of two yogis. The first, despite initially mispronouncing the Vajra Kilaya mantra, persevered with intense concentration and heartfelt devotion. This dedication enabled him to achieve higher spiritual realizations and perform extraordinary feats, such as piercing rocks with precision. In contrast, a more academically accomplished yogi, who recited the mantra flawlessly, faltered when plagued by doubts and confusion, ultimately losing his miraculous abilities. This narrative highlighted that true spiritual power stems not from mere knowledge but from sincere devotion and focus.

“The essence is clear,” Gyalwang Drukpa affirmed, “regardless of one’s scholarly achievements, without dedicated focus and deep devotion, genuine realization remains out of reach.”

Reconnecting and Preserving Tradition

Since its inception in 2009, the ADC has aimed to unite Drukpa masters annually, fostering collaboration to preserve their rich lineage while serving both Dharma and humanity. The latest council played a pivotal role in re-establishing connections among practitioners, scholars, and devotees globally. “This year’s gathering promises an even brighter future, characterized by enhanced harmony and cooperative efforts to sustain our lineage and the Buddha Dharma,” stated Gyalwa Dokhampa, an ADC advisor.

He further highlighted the council’s importance as a platform for transmitting sacred teachings, safeguarding ancient wisdom, and maintaining spiritual practices amidst the challenges of modernity, where traditional knowledge is increasingly at risk.

Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche, another prominent lineage holder, lauded the successful conclusion of the ADC, attributing it to the blessings of their root guru and the unwavering support from numerous rinpoches, sponsors, and volunteers both from the Himalayan region and beyond. The week-long event was a vibrant display of traditional rituals, art, music, and cultural expressions, all integral to sustaining Himalayan Buddhist culture and fostering community bonds.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond being an annual event, the ADC embodies Gyalwang Drukpa’s vision of unity and serves as a wellspring of inspiration, particularly for the younger generation actively participating each year. This edition saw over 500 volunteers from the Himalayan regions, including Bhutan, who not only provided essential support through their selfless service but also symbolized the lineage’s future. “Their engagement fosters a deep appreciation for our heritage and instills a robust sense of identity in a world often grappling with existential uncertainties,” Gyalwa Dokhampa remarked.

In his heartfelt closing remarks, Gyalwang Drukpa expressed immense gratitude towards the organizers and volunteers, acknowledging their dedication. “Witnessing the ADC unfold was profoundly moving and blissful,” shared Gyurmay Tsundu, a translator for Gyalwang Drukpa’s teachings. “It felt as though we stepped into the Amitabha Mandala, enveloped by His Holiness, numerous rinpoches, and countless masters and enlightened beings.”

Welcoming the New Year with Blessings and Hope

The council concluded with a vibrant celebration of the new year, where dignitaries including Gyalwa Dokhampa, Home Minister Tshering, Kyabje Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche, Khamdrak Rinpoche, various trulkus, Drukpa masters, Kungfu nuns, and numerous followers participated in Marme Moenlam—the lamp offering prayer—accompanied by firecrackers. Held at the sacred site of Kunkhen Pemakarpo and alongside statues of Lord Buddha, the ceremony symbolized hope and renewal for the year ahead.

As the ADC 2025 draws to a close, its legacy of unity, devotion, and preservation of spiritual traditions continues to inspire and guide the Drukpa Sangha towards a harmonious and enlightened future.
