Bhutan’s football ambitions have received a major boost, with FIFA committing USD 25 million over the next four years to strengthen the sport’s infrastructure, nurture young talent and expand opportunities for women and girls across the country.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the financial commitment during his visit to Bhutan, signalling a significant expansion of the international football governing body’s support for the Himalayan nation.
The latest allocation represents a remarkable increase from the USD 1 million provided over a four-year period when Infantino assumed the FIFA presidency. The enhanced funding is expected to accelerate football development at multiple levels, from grassroots participation to the national team’s competitive performance.
Highlighting the importance of sustained investment, Infantino said the increased financial assistance would create meaningful opportunities for young Bhutanese players, particularly children aspiring to pursue football.
Youth development emerged as a central focus of the visit, with the FIFA President attending the inauguration of a grassroots training initiative designed for children under the age of 12. The programme aims to introduce young participants to structured football training while building a stronger foundation for the sport’s future in Bhutan.
Another ambitious initiative under consideration is the establishment of a dedicated football academy capable of accommodating 500 young players, equally divided between boys and girls. The proposed facility would combine academic education with professional football training and feature four dedicated pitches.
Although the academy has yet to receive final approval, FIFA has indicated that technical experts will examine the proposal and evaluate its feasibility before further decisions are made.
Beyond infrastructure development, the international governing body intends to support Bhutan in identifying promising footballers, improving coaching standards and creating more competitive opportunities. Particular emphasis will be placed on increasing female participation and developing pathways for women and girls to progress in the sport.
The discussions also extended to regional football cooperation, with FIFA exploring the possibility of introducing a new tournament provisionally named the FIFA Himalaya Cup. If realised, the competition could provide an additional platform for football development and regional sporting engagement.
Bhutan Football Federation President Ugen Tsechup welcomed FIFA’s continued support while acknowledging the need for a fresh phase of investment to take Bhutanese football to a higher competitive level.
According to Tsechup, FIFA’s assistance has already enabled the federation to make considerable progress. However, he observed that existing development efforts have reached a stage where new initiatives are necessary to generate further improvements.
The federation has consequently submitted proposals aimed at strengthening the national team’s performance and improving the structure and effectiveness of grassroots football programmes.
Infantino’s visit also highlighted Bhutan’s distinctive sporting and cultural heritage. His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, hosted a luncheon for the FIFA delegation at Pangrizampa.
The occasion featured cultural performances and demonstrations of traditional Bhutanese sports, including archery and khuru, offering the visiting delegation an opportunity to experience the country’s indigenous sporting traditions.
With substantial financial assistance now pledged and several major development proposals under consideration, Bhutan is positioned to enter a new phase in its football journey. The success of these initiatives will depend on how effectively the investment translates into improved facilities, stronger training systems and sustained opportunities for the next generation of Bhutanese footballers.
