Paralympic Festival Highlights the Transformative Power of Inclusive Sports

The 7th Paralympic Festival 2026, held at Gesarling Central School on April 15, emerged as far more than a sporting event—it became a powerful statement on the role of sport in shaping an inclusive and compassionate society.

Graced by Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Paralympic Committee, the festival brought together over 1,000 participants, including students, educators, and local leaders. Anchored by the theme “We See Ability,” the event underscored a growing national commitment to recognizing talent and determination beyond physical limitations.

A Platform Where Sport Redefines Potential

Para sports in Bhutan are steadily gaining recognition as a vital force in redefining societal attitudes toward disability. Events like this festival showcase how sport can challenge perceptions, break barriers, and highlight human resilience.

The presence of Yeezang Dee Thapa, Minister of Education and Skills Development, alongside senior officials, reinforced the government’s active role in promoting inclusive education and equal sporting opportunities. Their participation signaled that inclusion is no longer peripheral—it is central to national development.

Celebrating Excellence on the Global Stage

A defining moment came when HRH Princess Eeuphelma personally honored two of Bhutan’s most accomplished para athletes:

  • Cheyang Kuenchap, bronze medalist at the Asian Youth Para Games 2025
  • Chimi Dema, bronze medalist at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026

Their achievements on international platforms highlight Bhutan’s growing presence in global para sports. More importantly, their stories of perseverance resonated deeply with young attendees, demonstrating that sport is not just about medals—it is about courage, discipline, and belief.

Sport as a Tool for Empathy and Inclusion

The festival grounds transformed into a dynamic arena featuring adaptive sports such as blind football, boccia, wheelchair basketball, para badminton, para shooting, and para archery. These activities offered participants firsthand experience of the challenges and skills involved in para sports.

By engaging directly, students and community members gained a deeper understanding of inclusivity—an experience far more impactful than passive observation. It is through such participation that sport becomes a bridge between different abilities, fostering empathy and mutual respect.

Collaboration Driving Change

The event’s success was the result of a coordinated effort involving the Bhutan Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Bhutan Insurance Limited, national sports federations, and the Dagana Dzongkhag Administration. This collaboration illustrates how multi-sector support is essential to building sustainable sports ecosystems.

The Broader Significance for Sport

The Paralympic Festival serves as a reminder that sport holds a unique power—it unites communities, challenges stereotypes, and inspires social change. In Bhutan, it is becoming a cornerstone for advancing inclusion, ensuring that every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to participate and excel.

As the festival concluded, its message lingered: ability should always be recognized above limitation. Through continued investment in para sports, Bhutan is not only nurturing athletes but also shaping a society where sport becomes a universal language of equality, dignity, and hope.
