Bhutan’s national football team is gearing up for a crucial opening encounter against hosts Bangladesh as the SAFF Championship gets underway on November 6. With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, the Dragon Boys are hoping to make their mark in the regional tournament and secure a place in the knockout stages.
The 23-member Bhutanese squad has been undergoing final preparations at the Bashundhara Training Ground in Dhaka. The team features three promising young players, reflecting an effort to strengthen the national side by introducing fresh talent alongside established footballers.
Leading the attacking line will be captain Chencho Gyeltshen, whose experience is expected to play an important role in Bhutan’s campaign. Although the team had a relatively short preparation period following the conclusion of the domestic league, Gyeltshen has expressed confidence in the squad’s abilities and the guidance of the coaching staff.
Young centre forward Sonam Dorji has also conveyed optimism about the team’s prospects, emphasising the importance of securing victories in both group-stage fixtures.
Head coach Gary Michael Phillips has reported a positive atmosphere within the squad, with players displaying enthusiasm and no immediate injury concerns ahead of the tournament.
Bhutan has been placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, while Group B comprises India, Maldives and Pakistan. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, with the championship final scheduled for November 17.
Historically, Bhutan’s most notable achievement in the competition came in 2008, when the national side advanced to the semi-finals.
As the tournament approaches, Bhutan will be looking to build on that achievement. A favourable result against Bangladesh could provide the momentum needed to challenge for a semi-final berth and strengthen the country’s standing in South Asian football.
