Buddhist Teachings and Modern Media Unite for Global Peace at New Delhi Conclave

The 2nd International Buddhist Media Conclave, jointly organized by the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) and the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), was inaugurated in the capital yesterday, bringing together religious leaders, media professionals, and scholars. Under the theme “Mindful Communication for Conflict Avoidance and Sustainable Development,” the event focused on the role of Buddhism in fostering peace and ethical communication in today’s turbulent world.

The event began with the symbolic lighting of the traditional lamp by Gurumurthy, chairman of the VIF, and Ven. Shartse Khensur Rinpoche Jangchup Choeden, secretary-general of the IBC, setting a reverent tone for the day. Among the prominent attendees were Dr. Arvind Gupta, director of the VIF, Grammy Award-winning musician Shri Ricky Kej, and former Indian football captain Shri Baichung Bhutia, who graced the event as guest of honor.

In his opening address, Bhutia emphasized Buddhism’s universal message of peace and self-sacrifice. “Buddha’s teachings offer a timeless message of peace and sacrifice,” he said. Bhutia stressed the critical role of Buddhism in promoting global peace and brotherhood, and underlined the media’s responsibility in spreading these vital messages across the world.

Dr. Gupta echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for restoring civilizational values through ethical thought and action. He highlighted the rich history of dialogue between Hindu and Buddhist scholars on these matters, suggesting that Buddhist values of ethical conduct and enlightenment could offer a framework for more balanced and responsible media reporting.

Ven. Jangchup Choeden, speaking to the audience, urged the world to be guided by the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and altruism. “At a time when greed and conflicts are rising, the guidance of the Buddha is crucially needed,” he remarked. His message resonated with the audience, emphasizing how Buddha’s teachings remain relevant in navigating modern-day challenges.

Gurumurthy, in his address, reflected on the damage inflicted on the world over the past centuries and pointed to India’s unique position as the birthplace of many profound philosophical traditions, including Buddhism. He underscored the potential of these teachings to shape a more harmonious future.

The conclave also included remarks from IBC Director General Abhijit Halder, who praised the enthusiastic engagement from the media. He announced plans for a larger conclave in the future, emphasizing that the world needed to embrace the Buddha’s teachings on conflict avoidance and sustainable development. Halder also noted India’s pivotal role as the land of Buddha, positioning the country at the heart of efforts to spread Buddhist principles worldwide.

The conclave aimed to foster dialogue on how Buddhist principles can help address contemporary global challenges such as conflict resolution, sustainable development, and ethical communication. The event emphasized the need for the media to adopt mindful, ethical practices aligned with Buddhist values, promoting peace in an increasingly divided world.

The discussions reflected growing global interest in Buddhism’s potential to contribute to peaceful communication and conflict resolution. Although the majority of the world’s more than 500 million Buddhists reside in Asia, particularly in countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand, Buddhism’s influence continues to resonate far beyond these borders. In India, where Buddhists make up less than 1% of the population, the religion still holds a deep cultural and spiritual influence.

The IBC, founded in 2013 and headquartered in New Delhi, serves as a global umbrella body for Buddhist organizations, promoting dialogue and cooperation across borders. The VIF, established in 2009, is a leading think tank dedicated to international relations and India’s role in the global order. Together, these organizations are working to highlight the relevance of Buddhist teachings in addressing today’s most pressing issues.

As the world grapples with complex challenges, the 2nd International Buddhist Media Conclave stands as a reminder of the timeless relevance of Buddhism’s messages of peace, ethical conduct, and mindful communication.
