Archery Star Aims for Olympic Glory in Paris

In the serene mountains of Bhutan, where the art of archery has long been revered, a new star is rising. Lam Dorji, 27, will proudly carry the hopes of his nation as he steps onto the grand stage of the Summer Olympics in Paris. Selected after rigorous trials earlier this year in Turkey, Lam Dorji’s journey from aspiring archer to national representative is a testament to dedication and unwavering perseverance.

Lam Dorji’s passion for archery ignited in 2012 when he responded to a call for national team trials. Since then, under the guidance of the Bhutan Archery Federation (BAF), his talent has flourished, marked by over 20 international tournaments and a steadfast commitment to excellence. Today, as he embarks on his Olympic odyssey, Lam Dorji understands the weight of responsibility that comes with representing his country on the global stage.

“Representing the country, we are the brand ambassadors. So, we don’t only represent ourselves; we are representing our country, king, people, and our nation. Because of that, I am doing my best,” Lam Dorji expressed, emphasizing his commitment to discipline and preparation.

Preparing for the pinnacle of his career, Lam Dorji has immersed himself in rigorous training alongside his coach, Park Young Sook. Their daily routine includes meticulous drills to refine every aspect of his technique, ensuring that his aim remains true amidst the pressures of Olympic competition.

“Lam Dorji shoots a lot of arrows when I check the number of arrows the athletes are shooting. He works really hard and he is very diligent. So, I am very proud of Lam Dorji and this is his first time competing in the Olympics,” Coach Park remarked, highlighting Lam Dorji’s dedication.

As Lam Dorji readies himself for the challenge ahead, he is aware of the formidable competition awaiting him in Paris. From seasoned veterans like Brad Ellison to emerging talents from across the globe, the Olympic archery arena promises fierce battles and unpredictable outcomes.

“In the Olympics, the best of the best compete. However, we never know if, on that day, luck will be on our side or not,” Lam Dorji acknowledged, reflecting on the uncertainties of elite-level competition.

With his eyes set on surpassing his personal best score, Lam Dorji remains steadfast in his pursuit of excellence. Through tireless practice and strategic preparation, including training under artificial lighting to simulate varying conditions, he is determined to leave a lasting mark in Bhutanese sporting history.

Joining Lam Dorji in Paris are fellow Bhutanese athletes Kinzang Lhamo, competing in the marathon, and Sangay Tenzin, representing the nation in swimming. Together, they embody Bhutan’s indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to sporting excellence.

As the countdown to the Summer Olympics opening ceremony on the 26th of this month begins, all eyes will be on Lam Dorji and his quest for Olympic glory. For this young archer from Bhutan, Paris represents not just a competition, but a culmination of years of hard work, determination, and a deep-seated love for the ancient art of archery.
