In a groundbreaking move to foster year-round cricket training, the Bhutan Cricket Council Board (BCCB) unveiled its state-of-the-art international standard indoor cricket academy in Thimphu. The facility, inaugurated on December 20, is set to transform the cricket landscape in the nation.
Historically, cricket players have honed their skills at the Gelephu cricket ground, facing challenges in the summer due to heavy downpours and winter’s freezing temperatures. However, the newly launched indoor cricket academy, located on the top floor of the Multilevel Car Park near the Lungtenzampa bridge, is set to change the game.
With five cutting-edge training pitches, the academy is a testament to Bhutan’s commitment to inclusive cricket development. The project, funded by the Asian Cricket Council at a cost of approximately Nu 4 million, promises a boost in training opportunities for aspiring cricketers.
Ranjung Mikyo Dorji, a senior national cricketer, expressed his excitement about the new facility, highlighting its timely initiation. “All the players are very excited and looking forward to using the nets,” he remarked. Dorji pointed out that the absence of an indoor pitch had previously limited training for office-goers who make up a significant portion of the cricket community.
The impact of the indoor academy is expected to be felt soon, with the Asian Cricket Council Challenger Cup scheduled to take place in Thailand in February. The upgraded pitches are anticipated to enhance the training regimen for players, and the selection process is already underway.
Damber S Gurung, the CEO of BCCB, shared insights into the broader vision behind the project. The new pitches will be accessible to cricket enthusiasts from 9 am to 10 pm, promoting a culture of inclusivity. Gurung also revealed plans for a membership program, emphasizing the primary goal of year-round coaching initiatives.
One notable advantage of the indoor facility is its convenience for parents. The clean and safe environment ensures that children can pursue their cricket aspirations without hindrance. As the nation embraces this new chapter in its cricketing journey, the BCCB’s indoor cricket academy stands as a symbol of progress and commitment to the sport’s growth.
