In a historic moment for the region, Bhutan has become the epicenter of Olympic unity as it hosts the first-ever Olympic Solidarity and Olympic Council of Asia Regional Forum. The event, held in the heart of Thimphu, kicked off today with an impressive opening ceremony graced by His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck.
The two-day forum, drawing delegates from 24 counties and regions across East, Southeast, and South Asia, is designed to fortify Olympic solidarity, foster the development of athletes, and strategize for a slate of upcoming international sporting events. “This forum is a call to strengthen Olympic solidarity,” declared the Prince during his welcoming address, emphasizing that every athlete – regardless of geography, gender, or circumstance – must have the opportunity to grow, compete, and belong.
Delegates and sports administrators convened to evaluate progress, address ongoing challenges, and synchronize their approaches in anticipation of major events such as the 20th Asian Games 2026 in Japan, the 3rd Asian Youth Games 2025 in Bahrain, and the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2026 in Saudi Arabia. These discussions mark a significant step forward in uniting the sporting community across diverse regions.
Vinod Kumar Tiwari, Deputy Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia, praised Bhutan’s rapid progress in sports development. He highlighted the pivotal role of His Royal Highness, noting his deep passion for sports and his longstanding commitment to nurturing the Olympic movement in Bhutan. “This forum provides a great opportunity for delegates to experience Bhutan while also allowing its citizens to witness the growth of the Olympic movement in the country,” Tiwari stated.
Beyond the boardrooms and discussion panels, the forum is already leaving a tangible mark on the local community. Sonam Karma Tshering, General Secretary of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, explained that welcoming over 80 international delegates not only enhances sporting ties but also gives a significant boost to Bhutan’s economy. “Our airlines, hospitality sector, restaurants, and local artisans all benefit from such events,” Tshering added. The committee’s enthusiasm underscores Bhutan’s readiness to host international sporting events and its capability to showcase its cultural and economic vibrancy to the world.
As part of the cultural and athletic celebrations, more than 300 students are slated to participate in the “Asian Games for All – Fun Run” at Buddha Point in Thimphu tomorrow. This event promises to offer a dynamic glimpse into Bhutan’s community spirit, providing a platform for interactive cultural exchanges and sporting exhibitions.
