In a vibrant display of camaraderie and athleticism, the Bhutan-India Friendship Association (BIFA) hosted a cross-border marathon today, traversing the picturesque landscapes from Simla in Assam, India, to Nganglam, Bhutan. The event not only aimed to bolster the enduring bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations but also commemorated the 69th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth Druk Gyalpo (King) and celebrated BIFA Day in Nganglam.
Drawing a crowd of 700 passionate participants, the marathon featured a diverse group of 500 runners from India and 200 from Bhutan. The scenic route offered runners a breathtaking journey through terrains that highlight the natural splendor and shared cultural heritage of Bhutan and India. As participants moved through lush valleys and majestic hills, the event underscored the deep-rooted connections and mutual respect between the two countries.
Beyond the physical challenge of the race, the marathon served as a platform for cultural exchange. Spectators and runners alike were treated to traditional performances that showcased both the unique and common cultural narratives of Bhutan and India. These performances added a festive atmosphere to the event, reinforcing the theme of unity through diversity.
The competitive spirit was palpable as the top ten runners were awarded prizes across four categories: men and women over the age of 45, and young athletes representing local schools. The award ceremony not only celebrated the athletic prowess of the participants but also honored their dedication to fostering unity and goodwill between Bhutan and India. Winners were lauded for their exceptional performances and their role in promoting the spirit of friendship through sports.
The Bhutan-India Friendship Marathon stands as a testament to the strong ties and collaborative spirit between Bhutan and India. By bringing together athletes and communities from both nations, BIFA has successfully created an event that celebrates shared values, promotes mutual understanding, and strengthens the bonds of friendship that have long connected these two vibrant countries.
