In a historic debut at the Asian Winter Games 2025 in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China, Chencho Dorji emerged as Bhutan’s first alpine skier on the international stage. Competing against 58 elite athletes from across Asia, Chencho secured an impressive 23rd place finish, marking a significant milestone not only for his personal career but also for Bhutan’s burgeoning presence in winter sports.
The Games, which featured competitors from 34 countries, were held from February 7 to February 14. Despite being Bhutan’s sole representative in alpine skiing, Chencho’s performance resonated far beyond his ranking. “Representing Bhutan as a sole participant in alpine skiing was an incredible honor and a humbling experience,” Chencho remarked. “It was empowering yet challenging to carry the responsibility of pioneering this sport for my country.”
Chencho’s journey to the Games was driven by a passion for the mountains and a lifelong fascination with skiing. Growing up in an environment where winter sports were within reach, he was inspired by the thrill of gliding down slopes—a pursuit that soon evolved into rigorous training and international competition. His debut at this elite event allowed him to measure his abilities against some of Asia’s best alpine skiers. “Competing among such elite athletes was both inspiring and a major learning experience,” he said, adding that the event provided valuable insights into advanced racing techniques and the intensity required at the highest level.
Though he acknowledged the fierce competition, Chencho was content with his performance. “I am happy with the outcome because just being there and competing at this level was a major achievement for me and the country,” he explained. The overwhelming support from family and friends helped him overcome the challenges of being the lone representative, reinforcing his belief that Bhutan, renowned for its mountainous landscapes, has a rightful place in the global winter sports arena.
Looking ahead, Chencho is already setting his sights on qualifying for the 2026 Winter Olympics. With plans to enhance his FIS points and gain more international experience, he intends to intensify his training under professional coaches. “The Winter Olympics is challenging, and I may not make it in 2026, but I am ready to give everything I have,” he stated. His unwavering commitment to representing Bhutan at the Olympics underscores his dedication to his sport and his nation.
