In a historic first, Bhutan’s reigning A-League champions, the Thimphu Magics, are gearing up to represent their nation in the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Club Championship. The prestigious tournament will take place in Chennai, India, from the 2nd to the 6th of next month and will feature elite club teams from India, Pakistan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
Founded in 2006, the Thimphu Magics have built an impressive legacy over the years, amassing around eight national trophies that include multiple A-League championships and the coveted Coronation Championship. This international venture marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first time a Bhutanese club competes on such a prominent stage.
Team captain Sherab Jatsho expressed the team’s enthusiasm for the opportunity. “This tournament isn’t just about winning a trophy,” Jatsho noted. “It’s about showcasing Bhutanese talent on an international platform and raising the standard of our A-League. Competing against top clubs from across South Asia will inspire our players to push beyond our previous limits.”
The Magics are brimming with optimism as they prepare to face a formidable lineup of opponents. Player Dago Retty shared his excitement about the upcoming challenge: “We are proud and delighted to represent both our club and our country. Facing teams from five nations, we are hopeful for a victorious outcome that will bring more recognition to Bhutanese basketball.”
A notable highlight for the team is the involvement of key players who have tasted international success. Rabgay, a former national team member celebrated for clinching Bhutan’s first international basketball trophy at the Five Nation Championship by defeating Bangladesh, emphasized the tactical strength the team will bring to the court. “Our strategy revolves around the highly strategic 3-2 defence, a system imparted to us by Coach Kim. We’re eager to implement this approach and anticipate it becoming a hallmark of our play in Chennai.”
Under the seasoned guidance of head coach Nima Gyeltshen, the team has been intensively training, with daily sessions scheduled both in the morning and evening. Despite a relatively short preparation period, Gyeltshen remains upbeat about the prospects. “We might not have had as much time as we would have liked, but the spirit and determination within our team are unmatched. With the blend of fresh talent and experienced national team players, I believe we can compete strongly on the international stage.”
The Bhutan Basketball Federation regards the SABA Club Championship as a premier event that not only provides a competitive arena for club teams but also plays a crucial role in elevating basketball standards across South Asia. As the Thimphu Magics set their sights on this significant milestone, their journey underscores a broader narrative of growth and ambition for the sport in Bhutan.
With national pride and high hopes riding on their performance, the Thimphu Magics are poised to bring home more than just a trophy—they aim to pave the way for a brighter future for Bhutanese basketball on the international circuit.
