Bhutan’s Paro FC is set to welcome a footballing legend as Keisuke Honda, the 38-year-old Japanese international, signs a one-game contract with the club. Honda is scheduled to make his debut in the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge League match against Nepal’s Church Boys United on August 13.
The move marks Honda’s return to professional football after a two-year hiatus, adding another chapter to his illustrious career that has spanned ten countries. Known for his dynamic play and creative flair, Honda has played for various clubs worldwide, and his appearance with Paro FC is eagerly anticipated by fans and players alike.
Currently, Paro FC is leading the BoB Bhutan Premier League 2024 with an impressive 25 points. However, it remains unclear if Honda will feature in the league matches leading up to the AFC Challenge League fixture on August 13.
Paro FC’s President, Karma Jigme, expressed his enthusiasm about Honda’s arrival. “We are thrilled to have such an exceptional international player join us. Honda’s extensive experience will undoubtedly boost the team’s morale as we prepare for this crucial match in the AFC Challenge League,” Jigme stated. He also highlighted that Honda’s presence would be a tremendous learning opportunity for the players and a testament to Paro FC’s commitment to advancing Bhutanese football.
Honda, known for his versatility as a left-footed attacking midfielder and winger, brings a wealth of experience to Paro FC. His notable skills include executing bending free-kicks and striking from long distances, qualities that have earned him recognition across the globe.
Expressing his excitement about the new challenge, Honda said, “This is a unique opportunity to bring my experience to a new environment and help the team achieve its goals. Competing in the AFC Challenge League is an exciting prospect, and I look forward to working with my new teammates and engaging with the passionate fans of Paro FC.”
Honda’s illustrious international career includes 90 caps for Japan’s national team between 2008 and 2018, with standout performances at the 2011 Asian Cup, where he was named player of the tournament. His presence in three consecutive World Cups—2010 in South Africa, 2014 in Brazil, and 2018 in Russia—solidifies his reputation as one of Asia’s football greats.
Born in Osaka on June 13, 1986, Honda’s arrival in Bhutan is set to be a significant moment for the local football scene, offering both inspiration and an exciting prospect for fans and players of Paro FC.
