The race for a place in Bhutan’s top-flight football league began in earnest yesterday as the BOB Bhutan Premier League Qualifiers got underway at Changlimithang Stadium.
Seven teams have entered the fray, but only two will earn promotion to the BOB Bhutan Premier League 2026, the country’s highest professional football competition. With limited spots available, every match is expected to carry significant weight in the weeks ahead.
Namlha FC made a strong opening statement, defeating BFF Academy 4–1 in the tournament’s first fixture. The convincing win positions Namlha FC as an early contender in what promises to be a tightly contested qualifying campaign.
This year’s qualifiers are also notable for the return of Thimphu FC to competitive football. Established in 2014, the club quickly rose to prominence in Bhutanese football. Between 2015 and 2017, Thimphu FC finished runners-up in the BOB National League for three consecutive seasons and were four-time runners-up in the Thimphu League. However, the club stepped away from competition after 2019 and has been absent from the domestic scene for more than seven years.
Now, Thimphu FC is back with renewed ambition.
Manoj Adhikari, the club’s manager, reflected on the team’s earlier years and its aspirations moving forward. He said that before the pandemic, the club was among the country’s elite sides, featuring notable players and consistently challenging for top honors. According to him, circumstances personal to the club led to their hiatus, but the return is driven by a desire to rebuild and provide opportunities for young talent.
“Our main idea is to give a platform for the youngsters to play,” he said, adding that the club aims to challenge established powerhouses and regain its place among the top-tier teams.
The qualifiers also introduce new faces to the competition. Samdrup Jongkhar FC and United Phuentsholing FC are making their debut appearances, adding fresh energy and regional representation to the tournament.
Meanwhile, BFF Academy U-19 is participating as a guest team. While the young squad will gain valuable competitive exposure, their results—whether wins, draws, or losses—will not impact the official points table.
Other participating clubs include Thimphu Raven FC, BFF Academy U-17, and Namlha FC, all based in the capital.
The tournament will follow a single-league format, with each team battling for points across the schedule. With only two promotion spots available, the margin for error is slim. Teams must maintain consistency and resilience to secure qualification for the 2026 season.
Attention now turns to tomorrow’s fixture, where Thimphu FC will face Thimphu Raven FC in what could set the tone for the returning club’s campaign. As the qualifiers unfold, the intensity is expected to rise, with each side determined to claim one of the coveted places in Bhutan’s premier football competition.
