The Changlimithang Sports Arena is buzzing with excitement as the 2024 National Federation League reaches its midpoint, showcasing the growing prowess of volleyball in Bhutan. Since its commencement on October 12, six formidable clubs—WE Spikers, Tensung, Drukpol, BVBF Academy, Old Friends, and CNR—have battled fiercely for supremacy under the vigilant organization of the Bhutan Volleyball Federation (BVBF).
As the tournament progresses, WE Spikers and Tensung have emerged as the frontrunners, each amassing nine points from three victories out of five matches. Close on their heels, Drukpol holds six points, while BVBF Academy trails with three. Old Friends and CNR are yet to secure their first points, striving to climb the rankings in the remaining fixtures.
Ugyen Dorji, BVBF’s Programme Officer, highlighted the tournament’s evolving landscape. “For the first time in our country, both WE Spikers and Old Friends have incorporated foreign players from India,” Dorji remarked. “This marks a significant step forward for volleyball in Bhutan, demonstrating our commitment to elevating the sport.”
The introduction of BVBF Academy and CNR as new contenders adds fresh energy to the league. Today’s match at 6 PM pits Old Friends against BVBF Academy, a crucial encounter that could reshape the standings. Karma Dorji, coach of BVBF Academy, expressed confidence in his young squad. “Our players, all under 19 and students from Thimphu, have shown remarkable skill and determination. Beating Old Friends today is essential for us to advance to the semifinals.”
Meanwhile, CNR’s coach, Dorji Wangda, remains optimistic despite a challenging start. “We’re aiming to turn things around by winning our remaining two matches against Old Friends and Drukpol,” Wangda stated. “The lack of game exposure has been a hurdle, but this tournament provides the perfect opportunity to address and overcome it.”
Supporting teams from outside Thimphu, the BVBF has allocated Nu 25,000 to assist with food and lodging expenses, ensuring all participants can compete without financial strain. This initiative underscores the federation’s dedication to fostering a competitive and inclusive environment.
Players across all teams have lauded the National Federation League as an invaluable platform for honing their skills and showcasing their talents. The league’s structure, where each team faces every other club once, promises intense competition leading up to the grand finale scheduled for November 1.
As the league advances, fans eagerly anticipate thrilling matches and the emergence of Bhutan’s top volleyball talent. With the final stages approaching, every point counts in the quest for national glory.
