In an electrifying display of traditional archery prowess, Trashigang’s Udzorong Gewog emerged victorious at the 2024 Druk Wangyel National Traditional Archery tournament, overcoming Martshala Gewog of Samdrupjongkhar in a nail-biting finale held at the Changlimithang Archery Range yesterday.
The competition, which spans one and a half days, witnessed Udzorong dominate the best-of-three sets format by winning two consecutive 25-point rounds. The opening set, held on January 11, saw Udzorong secure a 25-18 victory, setting the tone for what would become a memorable tournament. Despite Martshala’s early dominance in the subsequent set – leading 23-9 in the initial rounds – a dramatic surge by Udzorong turned the tide. In a rapid-fire exchange that left spectators on the edge of their seats, the Trashigang team consecutively elevated their score from nine to 16, then to 24, clinching the match with the precise execution of two kareys.
Udzorong’s team captain, Nado, expressed heartfelt gratitude following the win. “Winning this tournament is a great privilege for the team and the people of Trashigang who have been supporting us from day one,” he remarked. He also extended special thanks to Jigme Tenzin, proprietor of Shambala Construction Private Limited, and team coordinator Cheku Wangchuk for their generous support during the competition. Despite having only a handful of players with previous tournament experience, Nado credited strong teamwork as the cornerstone of their success.
The 2024 Druk Wangyel Archery Tournament is widely regarded as the nation’s most prestigious traditional archery event. Established in 2004 to honor His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo’s visionary leadership and valor during the 2003 conflict, the tournament continues to be a symbol of national pride and unity.
Martshala’s Captain, Ugyen Dorji, reflected on the outcome with commendable sportsmanship. “We gave our best, and while we are disappointed not to win, participating in a tournament that pays tribute to the beloved Fourth Druk Gyalpo is an honor,” he commented. Dorji also acknowledged the unwavering support from the people of Samdrupjongkhar throughout the competition.
In recognition of their achievement, the winning team from Udzorong was awarded a cash prize of Nu 195,000 alongside a coveted trophy, while Martshala received Nu 169,000 with their trophy. Additionally, four individual awards of Nu 13,000 each were distributed during the event. Jangchuk Dorji of Kurtoe Gewog earned the title of Best Archer after hitting 38 kareys in 121 rounds, along with a special cash prize of Nu 15,000.
Organized by the Bhutan Indigenous Games and Sports Association, the tournament brought together 58 teams representing 50 gewogs from across the country. What began on November 4 last year not only highlighted the rich cultural heritage of traditional archery but also served as a platform to promote local talent and foster unity among Bhutan’s diverse communities.
With its blend of skill, strategy, and cultural pride, the 2024 Druk Wangyel National Traditional Archery tournament has once again proven to be a cherished sporting event, uniting the nation in celebration of Bhutan’s storied history and enduring spirit.
